10 Ways of Looking at Coffee By Julia Johnson

10 Ways of Looking at Coffee
I.
It’s the smell
That grabs you first
The aroma of pure delight
Like the first time
You ride a bike
Coffee is the bliss.
II.
Fingers trembling
Feet tapping
Forehead sweating
Heart pulsing
Coffee is the desire.
III.
A porcelain mug
Stains the table
As sunlight shimmers
Against the murky substance
Coffee is the light.
IV.
One sugar
Two sugars
Three creams
Four milks
A blend of swirls
Colliding head to head
Creating a potion
Coffee is the sorcerer.
V.
A cloud of steam rises indicating
The scorching liquid within
A sip too fast causes a
Shocking pain
Coffee is the ache.
VI.
A pounding rumbles through
The wood paneling
Vibrations like mini earthquakes
Coffee is the natural disaster.
VII.
Cold is averse to Hot
Hot is averse to Cold
Yet, they are One
Coffee is the cause.
VIII.
The hallucinations begin
Thousands of voices
Roar around us
A unicorn passes by
Another Earth lives
There’s a fog inside our minds
Coffee is the alien.
IX.
Just another day
Sitting in the same café
Reading a book
In a little nook
The warmth of the drink
Acts as the only company
Coffee is the flame.
X.
There are stimulants
There are depressants
We consume both
But in those late nights
And early mornings
Everyone wants to feel
Alive
Coffee is the strength.
